Associate Degree of Arts and Entertainment Management

A week of classes studying live music business will see you negotiating a performance agreement on a Tuesday morning, pitching a marketing plan for a national tour on Wednesday, and tracking ticket sales for a gig you’re producing in the afternoon. You’ll learn the live music business by living it.

Industri delivers this course with a focus on operations and management practices specific to the live music industry. This allows you to earn a qualification focusing on business literacy and operations, study while developing your skills and understanding of a specific sector of the music industry.

Curriculum Details

Trimester 1

The theme of the first stage is core professional skills development, including writing, presenting and negotiation. You will also become familiar with the various businesses and roles in the industry, as well as how they fit together.

Trimester 2

In stage 2 you begin working towards real outputs in industry. In the Collaboration Project, you work in groups to source talent for, book, promote and produce a gig. Simultaneously, you learn applied marketing skills in parallel with an actual tour or festival campaign, and gain insights into management and working effectively within organisations of different sizes.

Trimester 3

With the learnings from your previous project, in Stage 3 you produce another music event, possibly trying out a different role than you took on in Stage 2. You also undertake a volunteer placement at a music event and learn about the economics and logistics of live entertainment in greater depth.

Trimester 1

At the start of your second year, the scale of your event projects increases. You’ll engage in a series of workshops to push the music industry forward, exploring new ways to approach the challenges faced by the music industry, both big and small. You’ll also pitch for and plan a PR campaign for a real music event.

Trimester 2

In Stage 5 you delve into the financial aspects of music businesses, learning how to work with accountants and identify key elements of financial statements. You’ll undertake your biggest collaboration project yet, applying your specialised knowledge of booking, production, marketing and PR learnt in previous stages. You’ll also turn your attention to what you want to see change in the industry in the scholarship unit.

Trimester 3

The final stage of your course includes an Industry placement, in which you are placed in an organisation similar to the area of work you’d like to pursue after graduation. You’ll also learn the nitty gritty of what it really takes to start your own business, from assessing viability to fundraising, and have an opportunity to present your business concept to industry at a pitch night.

Ben has an extensive background in tertiary-level music education, having led and managed large-scale programs from Certificate 3 to Masters, covering all areas of the music industry. Ben also performs regularly as a drummer and has toured and recorded with many great Australian artists, including Frente, The Audreys, RockWiz and Missy Higgins.

Ben's industry experience and educational leadership combine to ensure the programs he leads are industry-relevant and innovative and, most importantly, that they support students in finding viable careers.

What are the entry requirements?

We understand that ATAR is not the sole measure of your potential. To qualify for our live sound production Associate Degree, you must meet one of the following entry pathways:

  • Satisfactory completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Year 12 Certificate within the last two years (e.g., HSC or VCE*) with a minimum Band 3 in HSC English Standard (or equivalent).
  • Completion of an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma qualification within the past 2 years.
  • Satisfactory completion of an AQF VET qualification (Certificate IV and above) or equivalent as assessed by DET.
  • Completion of at least six months of full-time tertiary study at AQF level 5 or higher.
  • Mature age students (21 years or older).

The credits you’ve earnt studying with will be fully transferable to the Australian Institute of

Music (AIM). This means you are able to complete a Bachelor’s degree with just one more year of study at AIM.

What are the Course Fees?

The indicative total cost for either of the Associate Degree courses we offer is $44,660 over two years.

However, if you wish to complete the diploma, which takes only one year, the cost is $23,320.

Fee help is available

As we partner with a registered higher education provider, we can make our courses more accessible via the Australian Government’s Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). In most cases, FEE-HELP will cover your entire course fees.

Upfront Payment

If you don’t qualify for FEE-HELP or prefer to pay as you go, upfront payment is the way to go. We’ll invoice your tuition fees each semester, and you can pay via direct deposit/transfer or credit card.

If you have an ear for picking musicians on the rise, and love gifts this is the job for you. They secure live bookings, negotiate contracts and coordinate bookings with venues, promoters, and festivals - helping to grow the careers of musicians.

Venue Manager

You would oversees the day-to-day operations of a music venue, managing staff, coordinating with artists and promoters, handling budgets, and ensuring that events run smoothly and provide a safe, enjoyable experience for the audience.
