Become responsible for delivering incredible live events and acts

Do you dream of working with top festivals, venues or touring companies? Want to help breathe new life into the magic of live music?

If you’re interested in a career in the business and management side of the performing arts industry, we’re here to make it happen.

What you will learn in this course

Year One

This is your foundational trimester, where you'll be introduced to essential music and sound theory, alongside writing and presentation skills that will support your learning throughout the course. You will learn how to construct a compelling argument in writing, understand the principles of signal flow in live audio equipment, and begin honing your ear for live sound practice, among other critical topics covered this trimester.

In the second trimester, you'll enhance your skills in live mixing, delve into production planning, and deliver live sound for real gigs. You'll collaborate with your classmates to produce a live music event, all with the guidance of our industry-experienced teaching staff. This trimester also broadens your understanding of the business aspects and functions of the music industry, as well as its economic drivers—crucial knowledge for professionally navigating your career.

At the end of your first year, you have a lower subject load, designed for you to get out into the industry as the summer events season kicks off. In the classroom, you delve more into managing yourself and your career as an industry professional, as well as understanding how music works, to amplify your sound practice. You also build on your project experience delivering a gig last trimester, and work with your peers to take more ownership in planning another, bigger live gig.

Year Two

At the start of your second year, the scale of your event projects increases. You’ll engage in a series of workshops to push the music industry forward, exploring new ways to approach the challenges faced by the music industry, both big and small. You’ll also pitch for and plan a PR campaign for a real music event.

In the second trimester, you start working towards tangible outcomes in the industry. During the Collaboration Project, you'll work in teams to source talent, book, promote, and produce a live music event. Alongside this practical experience, you'll learn applied marketing skills through direct involvement with an actual tour or festival campaign. Additionally, you'll gain valuable insights into management and how to work effectively within organisations of various sizes. This hands-on approach ensures that you not only understand the theory but also apply it in real-world scenarios.

At the course's final stage, you tie the knowledge and skills gained so far together, delivering live sound from planning stages to post-show evaluation, with all the troubleshooting, live mixing, networking and broadcasting in between. You will also go out on a placement linked to the area of the audio industry you want to pursue after graduation, getting real-world experience in one of our partner organisations.

Embark on an educational experience like no other

Our small class sizes emphasise dedicated mentorship with our industry experienced instructors — providing the unique insights and in-demand skills necessary to ensure that all of our students are industry-ready when they graduate.

And if you decide to continue your education, the credits you’ve earned will be fully transferable to the Australian Institute of Music, meaning you can complete a Bachelor’s degree with just one more year of study.
